Studying Linguistics at Newcastle University
What was your work/study experience before joining this course?
I was fortunate to have several years of professional and educational experience before pursuing my Master’s degree in Newcastle. After completing my secondary education, I simultaneously studied and worked as a graphic designer but eventually transitioned into marketing and communication. Subsequently, I gained experience working in a non-profit organization and two marketing agencies in Switzerland and Germany.
Alongside my professional journey, I pursued a part-time Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communication & Marketing. Even during my full-time studies at Newcastle, I continued to work remotely for the company, where I have been employed both before and throughout my academic journey.
How was the course for you?
Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, my study experience at Newcastle University was profoundly influential. The transition to England and the subsequent quarantine posed initial hurdles, and the palpable sense of disappointment from being unable to engage in face-to-face classes made the first weeks really difficult. Nevertheless, the positive experiences outweigh the negative for me.
The curriculum fostered a culture of critical inquiry, empowering us to question established norms, challenge conventions, and articulate our unique perspectives. I appreciated the autonomy to choose essay topics and explore areas of personal interest. Departing from conventional examination methods, the emphasis on essay-based assessments offered me a valuable opportunity for in-depth analysis and nuanced argumentation.
Navigating the intricacies of language fluency, given the high language requirements and English not being my mother tongue, and acclimating to the different educational system posed initial hurdles, particularly in the international relations courses. However, as the semester progressed, I found my stride, forming friendships and feeling less overwhelmed.
The unwavering support and guidance of the lecturers also played a significant role in my progress. Despite the pandemic, the university prioritized student well-being through regular communication and online activities. Overall, the courses were intellectually stimulating, expanding my horizons.
How has studying Cross-Cultural Communication at Newcastle helped you in your career?
Professionally, a profound understanding of intercultural communication and international relations offers significant advantages, particularly within the global landscape of international organizations, where I envision myself in the long term.
We live in a dynamic world characterized by the constant crossing of linguistic and cultural boundaries. Therefore, my acquired knowledge and insights not only enable me to navigate diverse cultural landscapes but also foster greater tolerance, acceptance, and stronger relationships among individuals from diverse backgrounds, thereby enhancing my social skills.
Ultimately, the success of any company relies on the human factor, and these skills contribute significantly to cultivating positive and productive work environments.
The company I am presently employed at is amidst a sustained growth and expansion phase. In this context, I recognize numerous areas where my knowledge and insights I acquired at Newcastle University provide me with valuable contributions. However, the impact extends beyond my professional role.
My journey has been marked by significant personal and professional growth, wherein I have cultivated self-awareness, honed strategic thinking abilities, and embraced forward-looking perspectives that transcend conventional paradigms. These qualities are equally important alongside hard skills.
Furthermore, my experiences in Newcastle were crucial for me to start a second Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and Organisational Communication shortly after graduation. The academic foundation I gained at Newcastle University provides significant support in this endeavour.
What advice would you give to a student interested in studying Cross-Cultural Communication?
If English is not your native language or if you are concerned about meeting the academic requirements, rest assured that these skills can be learned.
At Newcastle University, you will receive generous support and understanding because you are not alone in facing these challenges. Moreover, in the Master's program of Cross-Cultural Communication, almost everyone shares a similar experience, as the classes are highly diverse and international.
