Studying Linguistics at Newcastle University

What was your work/study experience before joining this course?

Before joining this course, I already had a lot of experience working and studying; hence I was a bit more senior than other students on this course. I did my undergrad degree in International Business in the Netherlands, with a study abroad in Thailand. Furthermore, I worked in the Management consulting industry in various countries such as Germany and Luxembourg.

How was the course for you?

One of the most enriching and positive experiences I had while studying cross-cultural communication and international management was participating in a group project that required collaboration with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. We were tasked with developing a business strategy for a fictional multinational company entering a new international market.

Working with my teammates from different countries and cultural perspectives was eye-opening. Each person brought their unique insights, experiences, and communication styles to the table, creating a dynamic and vibrant learning environment. We encountered various challenges, such as language barriers, contrasting approaches to decision-making, and differing cultural norms and business practices.

However, instead of viewing these challenges as obstacles, we embraced them as opportunities for growth. We actively engaged in open and respectful discussions, encouraging everyone to share their viewpoints and opinions. This allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of each other's cultures, values, and communication preferences.

As we progressed through the project, we gradually developed a strong sense of trust and camaraderie within our group. We realised that our diverse backgrounds and perspectives were assets rather than hindrances. By leveraging our collective knowledge and experiences, we were able to create a comprehensive business strategy that accounted for cultural nuances, market preferences, and local regulations.

Beyond the academic aspect, studying cross-cultural communication and international management provided me with invaluable personal growth. It broadened my global perspective, enhanced my intercultural competence, and increased my adaptability in diverse settings. I became more attuned to the importance of cultural sensitivity and effective communication in fostering successful international partnerships.

Overall, this positive experience of studying cross-cultural communication and international management highlighted the power of diversity and cross-cultural collaboration. It taught me the significance of embracing differences, leveraging cultural strengths, and cultivating open-mindedness.

Such skills and experiences are not only relevant in the realm of international business but also contribute to personal growth and enriching interactions with people from diverse backgrounds throughout life.
