We asked Jasmine Ralphs, a Stage 2 Linguistics and German student what she loves about being a Student Leader:

"I enjoy being a student leader as it’s a great opportunity to share my passion for my linguistics! I particularly enjoy chatting with prospective students about studying English language/linguistics and it’s always great to see the excitement on peoples’ faces as they learn more about it. The prospective students and their families are really friendly and are genuinely interested to hear a student’s perspective on studying at Newcastle.

I like the fact that there are lots of different roles that you rotate between throughout the open days; one of my favourites is welcoming people into Percy to make sure they get a good first impression of SELLL. I also enjoy giving people tours of Percy; they are always impressed with the facilities and it’s a great chance to talk about Newcastle as a whole. I love feeling like I have helped people to make a more informed choice about their future.

Being a student leader is also a great way to earn some extra money without having to make a regular commitment."
And here is what Stage 1 English Literature and Creative Writing student, Scarlet Davies, loves:

"Working during Open Days has been so much fun! It’s a great opportunity to talk about your experience of your degree to students considering studying at Newcastle. It’s really relaxed, and the students get a chance to ask questions about English and life as a student in general. It’s particularly useful being in Stage 1 as you can talk to visitors about your recent experience joining the degree, the University and even the different modules that you take or are considering taking in the second year. Everyone working Open Days are super friendly and there is always help available if you don’t know the answer to a certain question. It’s a good way to earn some money whilst not feeling tied down by a regular part-time job. I would definitely recommend the experience!"

They will be motivated, energetic and able to connect with others using a friendly yet informative tone.

“Being a student blogger has been fun! I’ve enjoyed learning about all the amazing events that the School puts on (such as NCLA) and finding out about internship opportunities.

I’ve been able to develop my Canva skills when making Instagram posts and practice writing non-academically for the SELLL Careers website!”

We asked Eloise Crowder, a Stage 2 English Language and Literature student, what she has loved about working in the Percy Cafe this year:

"Working in the Percy cafe has been an incredibly rewarding job for me as a stage 2 student. The Percy cafe is not only a fun and relaxed environment, but it is also a fantastic opportunity to meet all SELLL students. The staff are incredibly supportive and friendly, making it easy to communicate and collaborate effectively. One of the things I most appreciate about working here is the flexibility of the working hours as they ensure that your working hours are tailored to your university hours and personal commitments. Working in the cafe has been a pleasure and I look forward to continuing to meet new and current students."
