Andrew Thompson
Lecturer in Creative Writing
As a playwright I have won the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award; The Stage Debut Award - Best Writer; and the Hope Theatre Prize.
I have also received an Arvon/Jerwood Fellowship; Playwright's Studio, Scotland New Playwrights Award; the Arthur P. Sloan Commission in conjunction with Manhattan Theatre Club, New York; was shortlisted for the Kenneth Brannagh Award; and was runner-up for the Alpine Fellowship. I have worked on attachment with the Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh as part of their L20 scheme and Wonder Festival; the Traverse Theatre/British Council as part of their Playwright's Residency Scheme in Japan; and developed the Writer's Hothouse Residency with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
My plays are published by Nick Hern Books. As a playwright I have also worked/am working with: Hampstead Theatre, English Touring Theatre (ETT), Arch468, Theater Clywd, Hightide, Sheffield Theatres, Vaults Festival, and Alphabetti Theatre amongst others.

Before working at Newcastle University I received post-graduate training at the Webber Douglas Academy and worked as an actor throughout the UK in film, theatre and television for companies including: The National Theatre, Sheffield Theatres, Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Stage Company, Southwark Playhouse, ITV, National Geographic and Channel 4.
Current/Recent work includes:
Godzilla: An examination of patriarchal society through the prism of a town under attack from a Beast. Developed in conjunction with Traverse Theatre/British Council/Playwright's Studio, Scotland and Creative Scotland
One Hundred Oxen: Pseudo-Greek tragedy set in the world of contemporary physics examining the concepts of grief, hope, sacrifice, black holes and open water swimming. Developed with MTC/Arch468/Mull Theatre.
CTRL/ALT/DEL: The story of the birth of the computer games industry in Dundee, set against the last violent strikes in the UK. Developed with ETT.
I am module leader on SEL2226 Theatre Script Workshop and SEL3401 Theatre Script Portfolio.
