A brief outline of my research project

Despite the revival of critical interest in Elizabeth Gaskell’s work in the late twentieth century, the persistence and complexity of anger in her work has been neglected. My thesis will contend that her work is, in fact, imbued with anger and that the meaning and expression of this emotion evolved across her career, reflecting her active engagement with contemporary discourse about the political and social functions of anger.
