Our outreach

Take part in our half-day and day-long Taster Sessions for A-level and AS-level students in English Literature and in English Language and Linguistics.

Secondary school teachers and students, join us for Visit Days and Taster Sessions

Hello Teachers!

Each academic year, we offer a range of half-day and day-long Taster Sessions across multiple topics in:

  • English Literature;
  • English Language and Linguistics.

We also offer an opportunity to:

  • Take a bespoke campus tour of the spaces most used by our students;
  • Learn about student life from current students.

Unfortunately, our 2025 School Visit Days are now completely booked up.  We are operating a waitlist for our March Visit Day and places are still available on our Discover Day.

Please continue below for the date of the March event, information on how to join the waitlist, sign up for our main mailing list, or contact the organisers.

Choosing your session

 Which is best for me and my students?

Visit Days are all-day events led by academics and students in our School.

  • On each day, there are two academic talks: one on English Literature and one on English Language/aspects of Linguistics such as sociolinguistics.
  • The talks are usually keyed to topics being studied on the A-level curriculum and give insights from the most recent research.
  • These are suited to students taking these subjects or related subjects at A-level.
  • It is possible to book for one or both talks. The Literature talks are in the morning and the Language talks are in the afternoon.
  • The full day includes degree overviews, a campus tour and the opportunity to hear from current university students.
  • The talks for our January Visit Day are: 'How to read a Poem' led by T.S Eliot prize-winning poet, Sinead Morrissey and 'Psycholinguistics', led by Dr Emma Nguyen, a researcher in Child Language Acquisition (20 January 2025).
  • Our second Visit Day focusses on 'Renaissance Drama' and 'Language Typology' (31 March 2025)

The Discover Day (May 12th) offers a day-long experience of a single subject.

  • Participating schools will need to sign up for either Literature OR Language and Linguistics.
  • The Discover Day introduces students to how these subjects are studied at university.
  • For information, please contact Student Ambassador, Ms Jas Shaw.
  • You can apply for a bursary to support travel to the Discover Day.

How many students may I bring?

  • The 2025 Visit Days are now full.
  • If you would like to be added to the waiting list for the March Visit Day please email  the Outreach team.
  • Please note that due to room capacity and the popularity of the Visit Day events we limit the number of students per school to 25.
  • If you would like to consult about your numbers in advance of joining the waiting list, please email Emma Nguyen (Language) or Chloe Ashbridge (Literature).
  • Places are available on the Discover Day. Please contact Jas Shaw to check about your numbers and/or for more information about the day.

How do I book?

Registration for the Visit Days is now closed.  If you have booked but are unable to travel please contact us as soon as possible to advise of this in order that a school on the waiting list may be invited to attend instead.
