Melanie's PhD project title is 'Debris flow risk: global assessment and local risk reduction' Read more about Melanie's research.
Project Description
Debris flows are a significant global hazard threatening people, the environment, and infrastructure.
Under a warming climate, debris flows are expected to become more frequent with increased intensity and frequency of precipitation events.
This project aims to assess potential debris flow runouts at a global scale, using global elevation models and remote sensing to find suspectable catchments and fans.
The global study will identify key areas at risk to complete debris flow modelling and fieldwork to validate the global model.
This project is funded by the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) through the OnePlanet Doctoral Training Program.
