I had a great experience, and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. If you’re thinking about taking on the role, do it. I think everyone should try it out!
Being a Peer Mentor
I became a Peer Mentor because I had a great experience with my Peer Mentor whilst in my first year. He helped me transition well into my first year as a university student. I wished to bring the same special experience to someone else and help them with whatever they needed.
As a Peer Mentor, I help my mentees with whatever questions they have. I also check in on them from time to time to make sure they’re adjusting well. Academically, I provide advice on assignments and answer any questions they have on how to study. As a previous mentee myself, I expect a Peer Mentor to be approachable and friendly. That’s why I tried my best to be as open with my mentees as I possibly could. I would say this approach has worked well because there are times where my mentees approach me without me initiating the conversation. I would say that’s the best kind of relationship to have between a mentor and a mentee.
Benefits of being a Peer Mentor
I think a skill I developed during my time as a Peer Mentor is creative thinking. There are many unexpected questions and concerns that may be raised from mentees and sometimes I had to gather my thoughts and different resources together to make up an appropriate response. Sometimes what we have isn’t enough and I had to think outside the box a little.
My mentees nominated me for Peer Mentor of the Year and I won! I was definitely shocked and wasn’t expecting it. I’m glad my mentees nominated me and trusted me by leaning into the process and experience. I had a great experience, and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. If you’re thinking about taking on the role, do it! I think everyone should try it out! While there are certain responsibilities that we have for our mentees, I really think it’s a fun and exciting process. You will have lots of fun and develop new skills.
