It might seem insignificant but being a Peer Mentor really helps new students to feel welcome at university. Your guidance will shape their experience in a positive way.
Being a Peer Mentor
I wanted to become a Peer Mentor to positively influence the experience of new university students. My Peer Mentor during my first year helped me to settle into my course and guided my learning.
As a Peer Mentor, I help my mentees to become familiar with the pharmacy course as well as the university campus. I offer advice and recommend things that helped me at different stages of university. From their Peer Mentor, a mentee should expect a friendly face that is always there for advice or guidance on where to find help. Peer Mentors should be empathetic, encouraging and a positive role model.
Benefits of being a Peer Mentor
My active listening and communication skills have developed while being a Peer Mentor, as this is required to understand situations and provide beneficial advice. My confidence has also increased as I use leadership skills to help my group of mentees.
