Medicine and Surgery MB BS

I am so thankful to have had a fantastic mentor who made me feel supported when I first entered medical school. I hoped that I could give that back and be that person for someone else when I took on the role.

Being a Peer Mentor

I was inspired by my own Peer Mentor to become one! I am so thankful to have had a fantastic mentor who made me feel supported when I first entered medical school. I hoped that I could give that back and be that person for someone else when I took on the role. I understand the challenges freshers may go through and I was willing to help them as they navigated through the transition period. Most importantly, I was certain that this would be a meaningful and rewarding role.

Peer mentors help first year students familiarize themselves with aspects of university life. They share their student experience and give their mentees a 'heads-up' about what to expect in the year ahead. As a Peer Mentor, I share my experience with my mentees, provide guidance, encouragement and motivation throughout the year. I help them to discover study methods that suit them so they won’t struggle for the rest of their student journey. Oftentimes, I contact them individually to check how they are dealing with university life. I will also schedule meetings to keep track of their progress and help them with their study plans when exams are around the corner.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

Problem solving, time management, team working, leadership, communication, planning and organisational skills are all of the transferable skills I am grateful to have developed thanks to my experience as a Peer Mentor.

I was nominated for Peer Mentor of the Year and I was touched beyond words when I was announced as Peer Mentor of the Year. Winning this award is a reminder to myself to always give and help others selflessly and I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my mentees for being kind and supportive throughout the year.

If you are considering becoming a Peer Mentor, I highly recommend giving it a try! Be the mentor you wish you had! I am sure that you will find it very rewarding and insightful! Mentoring is a two-way street. You will be able to make new friends with the same interests, develop transferable skills in a low-pressure environment and gain a fulfilling experience by making a positive impact on someone’s life. Always remember, true happiness is giving it away!
