Being a Peer Mentor and providing help, guidance, and support to new students to ensure that they have a well-balanced university life is a very valuable, rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Being a Peer Mentor

The transition from secondary education to the University can often be abrupt, as was my experience. However, I was fortunate to receive support from my Peer Mentor during this period. Recognizing the significance of this guidance and the struggles of new students, I decided to become a Peer Mentor and provide the same help to new students to ensure that they have a seamless transition.

As a Peer Mentor your role extends beyond providing academic support to your mentees. Primarily, you serve as a guiding presence, addressing any concerns and challenges your mentees might encounter to enrich their overall university experience. A Peer Mentor is the closest university member that students have to them and so Peer Mentors should provide help and advice to their mentees based on their previous experience.

A mentee can expect their Peer Mentor to be friendly and welcoming and to be available and approachable for assistance, maintaining open lines of communication, ensuring accessibility and guidance when needed.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

As a Peer Mentor, I had to organise regular online or in-person meetings with my mentees and this not only improved my leadership skills but also my time-management skills. Additionally, being a Peer Mentor means regularly communicating and engaging with your mentees and this certainly improved my interpersonal and communication skills. Finally, you are often asked to help and provide guidance to your mentees, so this has improved my problem-solving skills.

Being nominated for Peer Mentor of the Year is by far one of my proudest moments and is something that I will remember forever. For me this was a confirmation that the help that I provided to my mentees was useful and appreciated and I couldn’t be happier for that.

I would highly suggest to anyone considering becoming a Peer Mentor to apply for the role without any second thoughts. Being a Peer Mentor and providing help, guidance, and support to new students to ensure that they have a well-balanced university life is a very valuable, rewarding and fulfilling experience.
