I believe that the role of Peer Mentor is a very meaningful and responsible role, which enables us to strengthen the student community by building new relationships.

Being a Peer Mentor

I am the type of person who likes to help others and make them feel supported and welcomed. Almost three years ago I became an English tutor for younger teenagers from Poland and working with them consolidated my belief than helping and guiding others is what helps me be more fulfilled. I know that starting university and starting a new, more independent life may be challenging for a lot of people. That is why I decided to transfer the skills I acquired through my teaching to help first-year students to feel more comfortable and confident in a new environment.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

My mentees and I decided to take part in a peer mentoring induction period competition to try to apply our knowledge and show that even small changes can make a big difference. Taking part in this competition helped us to get to know each other better and it enabled us to improve our communication. Discussing ideas and hearing everyone’s opinions also helped me understand my mentees better. I was really surprised and excited when I found out that we had been nominated for the award! And then we learned that we had won first prize! I felt truly glad and touched about the fact that our idea was appreciated by the jury. W

During my time in the role, I developed communication skills as setting up meetings, or even just quick catch-up sessions all required good verbal and non-verbal skills (especially when you’re just starting to get to know people). Taking part in the induction period competition also taught me a lot about management and how important it is to reflect and write a good summary after each meeting! Lastly, peer mentoring has taught me that a strong leader is a supportive and understanding leader.

If you are thinking about being a Peer Mentor, I would say that it is 100% worth it as you not only provide support for other students and help them feel more confident in an entirely new environment, but you also grow as a person. I believe that the role of Peer Mentor is a very meaningful and responsible role, which enables us to strengthen the student community by building new relationships.
