Being a Peer Mentor
In my first year, my Peer Mentor was extremely valuable to me during my transition to university and I wanted to ensure that new students got the same experience as I did.
In my opinion, being a Peer Mentor is more about being a friend that your mentees can trust and ask for advice, not only during the first term but also throughout their university experience. From a Peer Mentor they should expect someone that is always there when they need help with anything academic or pastoral and who can also provide invaluable knowledge as a student that has been in their shoes.
Benefits of being a Peer Mentor
Leadership, problem solving, communication and approachability are some of the most important transferable skills I think I have developed further during my time as a Peer Mentor.
It was a shock when I found out that I had won Peer Mentor of the Year because I know that there are so many great Peer Mentors in the faculty! I think it shows that the little things really do matter!
If you’re thinking about being a Peer Mentor, I say just do it! It is such a great opportunity to inspire students and guide them into university life and show them everything that the university has to offer. And the transferable life skills that you will gain are invaluable for your future.
