Being a Peer Mentor is a rewarding and amazing learning experience which will open many doors for you in the future.
Being a Peer Mentor
I originally decided to become a Peer Mentor after my course mates and friends from university said it was a great opportunity to take part in. I had a lot to share with first years, things which I wish I had known in my first year of university, so I decided to become a Peer Mentor. As a Peer Mentor I am there to help new students, answering questions and signposting them to the correct area of support. I encouraged my mentees to take part in an induction period competition as I thought it was a great way to break the ice and get to know each other. Taking part allowed us to meet and got us talking, which was great.
Benefits of being a Peer Mentor
Being a Peer Mentor and taking part in the induction period competition, has not only enhanced my communication, team-working and creativity skills, but has also given me the chance to develop problem-solving, listening and leadership skills. I know for a fact that these skills will allow me to reach great heights in the future, as well as achieve professional and personal successes in the long run.
I wanted to part in the competition as I wanted to challenge myself and perhaps see if I could even motivate a few people along the way! Being shortlisted was so exciting to hear and when we won, I was beyond happy and felt so proud of my team and myself. Winning the competition has made me want to do more towards social causes and it is something I want to continue in the future. Furthermore, the support and recognition I have got since winning the challenge has been exciting and inspiring. I think I am extremely content knowing that I will be graduating from a university that truly contributes efforts towards uplifting the ideas and innovations of students.
If you’re thinking about becoming a Peer Mentor, just do it! Being a Peer Mentor is a rewarding and amazing learning experience which will open many doors for you in the future. Furthermore, it is a great opportunity to help first-year students and share your knowledge and experiences with them, which might even lead you to creating positive impacts in the lives of your mentees.
