Being a Peer Mentor is an incredible experience where you'll not only gain a huge number of new skills, but most importantly you'll have the opportunity to make lasting friendships.

Being a Peer Mentor

I decided to become a Peer Mentor because I wanted to share my experience, especially as an international student, with those who might be in the same situation as me in my first year. Having someone who has already adapted to a new environment can be very helpful and, most importantly, prevent you from getting homesick.

As a Peer Mentor, you will hold a few meetings throughout the year to see how your mentees are doing and if they need advice or guidance. I've become very close with some of my mentees, and we communicate on a weekly basis, which is a great thing because you have a better chance of connecting.

Peer Mentors give their mentees advice on how to live in Newcastle, how to deal with course-related problems or how to go abroad or on a placement. A Peer Mentor essentially becomes your experienced student buddy.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

I would definitely say that confidence and communication skills are the main transferable skills I have developed as a Peer Mentor. I also enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone by making new contacts and was very pleased when I could effectively provide my mentees with the guidance they needed.
