THE Awards 2024 Showcase
A showcase of resources and guidance created in support of AI for Learning at Newcastle University.
Newcastle's principles-led approach to AI
Newcastly University has taken a principles-led approach that recognises the positive and more challenging transformative nature of AI for education. Our position is not to prohibit the use of AI tools, but rather to offer colleagues and students support and guidance on how to use these tools responsibly, critically and ethically. Here we present our Five Principles for the use of AI, which align with Russell Group principles and reflect a greater emphasis on our long-term approach to thriving with evolving AI tools.
- Students and colleagues will be supported in developing their AI literacy, enabling them to critically, effectively, responsibly, and ethically communicate with and use AI tools.
- Teaching, assessment, and student experience strategies will be adapted to incorporate ethical use of AI tools.
- Academic integrity and rigor in assessment will be upheld.
- A culture of innovation, collaboration, and sharing of best practice in the application of AI tools will be fostered. We will maintain a dynamic position and adapt as AI technologies evolve.

AI Literacy
AI Literacy underpins the University's Five Principles. AI Literacy refers to the competencies we will all need as a foundation in a world that is enhanced with AI technologies. There is not a single framework of AI Literacy but the capabilities most relevant to learning cover all elements of recognising, interacting and using AI in a responsible, critical and ethical way. The resources showcased demonstrate how the Library has supported our community to enhance their capabilities around AI.
These videoes were created by the Library and LTDS teams to provide a simple introduction to some of the key competencies above.
AI for learning: students
A variety of resources were created to support students in developing their AI Literacy skills and to help them make informed judgments about how to use AI responsibly, critically and transparently during their studies. An emphasis has been placed on applied learning through creation of resources that can be used as part of a toolkit for approaching AI tools.
AI and good academic practice
The first set of guidance created by the Liaison Team for students was an introduction to AI and education, including its use in learning and assessment at Newcastle.
