Aims
This module will require the student to reflect upon the methods, whether physical or conceptual, by which they usually explore and express their ideas. Students will investigate and engage with alternative approaches to their habitual methods and strategies in the production of new work. They will critically examine the concept of working within a ‘discipline’ and the possibilities presented by interdisciplinary practice/research, encouraging the development of a more objective and informed view of their practice creating new opportunities for innovation.
Outline Of Syllabus
Introduction via a group seminar – discussion and examination of the relationship of discipline to individual practice. Exploring notions of skill, craft, content, meaning, process, material and presentation. Individual tutorials with appropriate academic and technical staff throughout the semester and a final individual presentation and group discussion to exchange experiences and reflect on outcomes.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The introductory seminar establishes the question(s) to be examined throughout the module and introduces each students established area of practice creating a forum for debate. It also allows for the identification of appropriate academic and technical support. Tutorials with specialist staff throughout the module will direct and inform the student’s individual research and practice. The final assessment seminar will be an opportunity for students to present the outcomes of the module and evaluate the outcomes of the project.
Scheduled leaching and learning activities such as workshops, demonstrations, individual tutorials and small group teaching will be conducted present in person in the Fine Art studios and workshops (or synchronous online if made necessary by Covid-19 restrictions). Where scheduled leaching and learning activities are delivered via non-synchronous online sessions they will be followed by a synchronous on-line drop-in Q&A session.
Teaching methods may be liable to adjustment in response to changes to Government and University advice in relation to Covid-19 restrictions.
