Aims

Digital technology is increasingly adopted by organisations to enhance business performance, this raises an important question: What role does an IT artefact play in achieving business excellence? This module delves into the principles of design thinking in information architectures and explores how organizations can attain business excellence and shape desirable futures through strategic information systems design (ISD).

Key topics include the practices and techniques involved in ISD—such as planning, analysis, design, development, testing, and maintenance—performed by various agents The module also examines the interplay of social, organizational, and technical factors that influence the success or failure of IS architectures. Furthermore, it investigates the reciprocal relationships between these systems and their design stakeholders.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The lecture sessions will provide students with fundamental and comprehensive knowledge of the core learning materials. These will be complemented by relevant case studies and group discussions. The seminar small-group sessions will allow students to ask questions and receive feedback on their group oral presentations and report preparation. Additionally, students will be encouraged to engage in independent learning, supported by recommended readings and diverse learning materials, such as videos and podcasts.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The presentation will evaluate students' knowledge by assessing their design of an IS architecture suitable for a given organizational context, as developed collaboratively within their group. The accompanying group report will assess students' learning journey during the design process, focusing on their contributions to the IS architecture, their critical evaluation of the outcome, and their ability to propose further improvements.
