Aims
This module aims to develop a core knowledge and understanding of normal human anatomy. By understanding normal anatomical structure and function, this will facilitate understanding of the anatomical changes which occur during the clinical presentation of injury and disease.
The style of the teaching aims to develop skills in independent learning; students are expected to study a series of computer-aided learning tutorials which are supported by several practical classes in gross anatomy in the dissecting room where students will have the opportunity to examine human material and apply their knowledge of human anatomy.
The module will also link to other elements of the SES program, such as physiology and biomechanics, to contextualise and apply this knowledge.

The module will cover anatomical terminology and introduction to anatomy of the following structures and systems:
• Introduction to anatomy (anatomical terminology and surface anatomy)
• Thorax (cardiovascular and respiratory systems) and back
• Lower Limb (musculoskeletal system)
• Upper Limb (musculoskeletal system)
• Abdomen and Pelvis (gastrointestinal and genitourinary system)
• Nervous System and Brain

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The module centres on computer-based material that students work through in scheduled workshop sessions in computer rooms and in their own time. These computer room workshops will allow space and time for students to work through the computer-based material, with staff present to clarify and answer any questions. The module will also use interactive lectures and practical sessions to support the computer-based material and advance students learning, including through formative assessment.
There are five practical sessions in the dissecting room to reinforce the content covered in the online material. Each practical session will have an associated interactive lecture to help provide structure and context to the practical sessions. The other interactive lectures will be used for interactive consolidatory activities, formative assessment and feedback. Formative activities will be embedded into interactive lectures and dissection room practical sessions (in the form of a mock anatomy spotter exam and practice MCQs).

Formative Assessments
Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
There will be a formative exam midway through the module of between 40-50 questions written in the same style as in the final exam. This will allow the students to gauge if their independent learning is at a sufficient level and enable them to get a feel for how the final exam will look. Formative assessment will also be embedded throughout the anatomy module in order to prepare students for both type of questions and content that will be assessed in the summative exam.
The MCQ final exam will test the students' knowledge and understanding of the anatomy covered in the module. Questions will range from simple identification tasks, to test the students' ability to recognise anatomical structures (both in diagrams, and more challenging cadaveric or clinical images), to more complex questions requiring students to understand anatomical structures in relation to their function (including the impact of injury to anatomical structures).
Students studying on BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences must submit all module assessment components and obtain an overall mark of 40 or above to pass the module – see the programme regulations and handbook for further detail.
