Aims
This module aims to introduce students to the principles and processes of research, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to be effective consumers and producers of research.
Outline Of Syllabus
The indicative topics covered in the module include:
• The principles and purpose of research
• How a sport and exercise scientist uses research evidence in practice
• Stages of the research process
• Research paradigms and experimental designs
• Effective data collection
• Key quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques (e.g. central tendency, variance, probability, hypothesis testing, correlation, regression, t-tests, ANOVA, non-parametric tests, thematic analysis, content analysis) and the interpretation of outputs
• Ethical considerations of research

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Computer-based practical sessions will allow students to develop and apply statistical analyses skills. These practical sessions will be supported with non-synchronous lecture materials to facilitate understanding and mastery of analyses techniques.
Lectures will introduce principles and processes of research, relaying key knowledge and supporting understanding. Seminars will allow students to consolidate and apply this knowledge and understanding in sport and exercise science contexts. Methods such as problem-based learning, journal club sessions, and inquiry-based learning activities will allow students to apply appraisal skills as both a consumer and producer of research.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The exam will assess student’s ability to select, justify, conduct and interpret appropriate data analysis techniques and statistical tests in sport and exercise science contexts. It will also assess knowledge and understanding of appropriate research paradigms and processes for specific sport and exercise science contexts. The exam will assess intended knowledge outcome 1 and intended skill outcome 2.
The portfolio provides students the opportunity, through a range of learning activities and experiences, to evidence appraisal of experimental designs and methods, and appraisal and application of research evidence. The portfolio will assess intended knowledge outcome 2 and intended skill outcome 1
