Computing Facilities

The state-of-the-art facilities and specialist labs offered at the School of Computing create a dynamic learning opportunity that develop the skills you need to work in industry.

Teaching spaces

Our teaching takes place across both the Urban Sciences Building (USB) and the Frederick Douglass Centre.

In the USB we have a:

  • 300-seat lecture theatre
  • large seminar room
  • large, flexible computer clusters
  • flat-floor teaching space

Our flat-floor teaching space has three separate computer clusters which can be linked together for practical workshops.

There are also collaborative spaces around the USB where students can study or work together on group projects.

As a postgraduate student, you’ll have access to dedicated spaces, including:

  • practical space on the fifth floor, primarily for MSc students
  • games lab on the fourth floor, designed for our Computer Game Engineering MSc students

MakerSpace

Our Open Lab research group has a MakerSpace, a collaborative space which includes tools, electronics and 3D printers.

There is also a full-time staff member available to offer advice on how to use the equipment.

Cyber Security Lab

A specialist lab designed for researching cyber security. This purpose-built room contains a virtualisation server and isolated network, with the capacity to support ethical hacking.

The lab’s facilities include:

  • smartphones
  • tablets
  • health monitoring equipment
  • kit replicating a smart building setup
  • a high-performance eye tracker
  • dedicated GPU-enabled machines for blockchain

We also run an annual Capture the Flag competition, supported by our corporate partners.


Student wellbeing

At the School of Computing, we’re committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse community. Student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do.

Student Wellbeing Adviser

The School has a dedicated Student Wellbeing Adviser who can provide you with guidance on a range of wellbeing issues including:

  • transitioning to university life
  • managing exam stress
  • effective time management
  • sleep
  • social isolation

They can also signpost you to further support available including counselling and disability support.

Quiet Room

The Urban Sciences Building offers a Quiet Room for breastfeeding mothers, those observing religious practice, or anyone who needs a moment of quiet.

Sensory space

We are also developing our sensory space designed with neurodivergent students in mind, and available for all students to use.


Urban Café

The Urban Sciences Building has its own café, Urban, which is located on the ground floor. It’s very popular with our Computer Science students.

The café offers a range of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and paninis, jacket potatoes and snacks.
