Deepayan Bhowmik is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) and the Director of Research at Newcastle University's School of Computing.
He obtained a PhD in Image Processing from the University of Sheffield (UK).
Before joining Newcastle, he worked as a lecturer in Computing Science at the University of Stirling & Sheffield Hallam University, a research associate at Heriot-Watt University, & the University of Sheffield and a systems engineer in ABB Ltd.
Deepayan Bhowmik's research focuses on fundamental image and signal processing and its applications. His research interests include image and signal analysis, computer vision, artificial intelligence, neuromorphic vision systems and intelligent vision systems design on heterogeneous hardware (Edge AI).
His research is applied to a wide range of domains, including (but not limited to) media security & forensics, remote sensing for earth observation and AI in space research.
His current research aligns with multiple UN sustainability goals (SDG), including #2: Zero Hunger, #5: Gender Equality, #6: Clean Water and Sanitation, #12: Responsible Consumption and Production and #14: Life Below Water.
Deepayan is heavily involved in developing the most recent JPEG Trust international standard that deals with Media Authenticity.
