Staff Profile
I was awarded a PhD in computational neuroscience from the University of Nottingham in 2021. During my PhD I focused on developing MRI processing tools and graph theory analysis (diffusion MRI and resting-state functional MRI) for pre-clinical models. Since then I have been working for Newcastle University as a full time researcher investigating and developing novel techniques in processing and analysing diffusion weighted images to help understand and predict outcomes in epilepsy (particularly in drug-resistant focal epilepsy).
Advances in computing and biomedical imaging provides an opportunity to revolutionise medical understanding, diagnosis, and treatment. Neurological disorders such as epilepsy and dementia are highly heterogenous and comorbid, making classical diagnosis and treatments unsuitable for many patients. Non-invasive methods such as MRI has reshaped how we identify and diagnose brain disease, but images are still analysed via basic visual interpretation of the neurologist/radiologist. This can often lead to unreliable diagnosis that can overlook subtle changes that can relate to a specific pathology/diagnosis. The main focus of my research is making use of advanced computational methods on medical images (primarily MRI) to develop quantitative approaches to help understand, detect and treat pathology.
