Introduction
Paul Ezhilchelvan received Ph.D. degree in computer science in 1989 from Newcastle University.
He received the Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1981from the University of Madras, India, and the Master of Engineering degree in 1983 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
He joined the School of Computing Science of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1983 where he is currently a Reader. His research interests are in
- Distributed algorithms,
- Consensus and multicast protocols,
- Concurrency control protocols in databases,
- Crash-tolerant stream processing,
- Performance evaluation and stochastic modelling.
Research Strands
My current research activities are generally under the broader topics of scalable computing and performance evaluation and can be categorised to in four distinct themes:
Scalable Concurrency Control in Distributed Databases: I work with two CDT PhD students in this topic and in collaboration with Neo4J. The on-going work develops and examines new concurrency protocols suited to crash-tolerant distributed systems while minimising unnecessary aborts.
Modelling and Performance Evaluation: Using Queuing theory, systems of interest are modelled, their performance evaluated and evaluation efficacy assessed by simulations or implementations. Areas of interest in this strand currently are resource allocation problems in Clouds and Stream Processing networks. The principle collaborator on the former is Professor Emeritus Isi Mitrani and on the latter are 1 CDT PhD student and another Industry-sponsored PhD.
Designing Algorithms for Novel Applications and Protocols: In collaboration with Atom Bank, Durham, an automated system for friction-reduced mortgage approvals is being developed. Also, with a PhD student, I am examining the leader overhead in total-order protocols and exploring leaderless, high-throughput ones.
Crash-Tolerant Stream Processing: Crash-tolerance in almost an after-thought in stream-processing system design. We are developing a smart fail-over system that can ensure the gold-standard, exactly-once semantics for end users for near-zero performance overhead in fail-free times.
Esteem Indicators
I have been doing paid consultancy work (since 2018) for Neo4j - the largest and the most well-known IT company for their product on Graph Databases. I advise them on addressing the design challenges in building distributed and crash-tolerant Neo4j graph databases.
I act as an external PhD examiner at prestigious Universities which include: York, Warwick, Imperial, Linkoping (Sweden) and INSA, Rennes (France).
I routinely serve in the Program Committees of many well-recognised IEEE/ACM conferences.
