Remco, a Dutch PhD student with a background in biomedical engineering, shares his journey from industry to academia. He tells us about the skills he's gained and his plans for the future.

What was your work or study experience before your PhD?
Before starting my PhD, I completed a Research Master’s degree in Behavioral Science. I have a background in Biomedical Engineering and previously worked in the medical implants industry as a Product Manager.
What are your future career plans?
During my PhD, I especially enjoyed the technical aspects like coding to develop the application and performing data analysis. I’m now planning to pursue a primarily technical career and have recently started a position as a Data Scientist.
I’ve also considered continuing to develop the app I designed for my PhD and make it publicly available, though I don’t have concrete plans for this yet.

I love learning and am drawn to environments where I can interact with and learn from great minds.
Have you done anything while studying to increase your employability?
I have continuously sought opportunities to develop practical, applied skills, such as learning to build an app. I also had the opportunity to complete a data science internship at Nokia which helped broaden my industry experience.
