Making a Difference at Cahaya Surya Bakti
On December 1st, 2024, the NUMed Paediatrics Society turned compassion into action with a heartfelt visit to Cahaya Surya Bakti, a Johor Bahru-based NGO dedicated to educating refugee children.

On December 1st, 2024, the Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) Paediatrics Society embarked on a meaningful mission to bring joy and support to Cahaya Surya Bakti, a local NGO in Johor Bahru that provides education to refugee children. This visit marked the culmination of weeks of fundraising, all driven by a simple yet powerful purpose: to brighten the futures of children facing significant hardships.
The journey of the Society began with an array of fundraising events, including bake sales, book sales, and merchandise stalls. The NUMed community rallied behind the cause, transforming everyday purchases into impactful contributions. Thanks to their joint efforts, the Society was able to provide not only financial aid but also essential school supplies to help equip the students with the tools they need to succeed.
Transforming Lives, One Smile at a Time
“We hope that our efforts could ease the burdens on both students and staff, creating an environment where these children can truly thrive,” shared Shivagi, Event Lead and an MBBS Year 2 student. “We aim to inspire them to dream big, persevere through challenges, and encourage others to champion education for refugee communities.”
The visit was filled with joy, learning, and meaningful connection. Volunteers led a range of activities, including colourful art sessions and spirited board games, which left everyone beaming with excitement. “The students’ enthusiasm was contagious,” Shivagi reflected. “Their cheers and laughter filled the room, and their camaraderie was a beautiful reminder of the resilience and warmth within their community.”
Encouraged by the success of this event, the NUMed Paediatrics Society is already gearing up for their next project in hopes of bringing similar support to another school in need. With each event, they hope to reach more children and create a ripple effect of positive change.
