Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) recently welcomed our incoming cohort with a fun-filled Orientation Weekend that was organised by our Student Association. In addition to fostering a sense of community and belonging among the new students and helping to ease their transition to university life, the event was also a platform to introduce the incoming Student Association 2024/25 committee and promote the upcoming election.

The Orientation Weekend featured a lineup of exciting activities that were designed to help new students bond and form connections, such as interactive games, team-building challenges, and a scavenger hunt around the campus. These activities aimed to break the ice, foster conversation, and encourage students to get acquainted with each other and the campus amidst a lively and lighthearted atmosphere.

Some of the event highlights included:

  • Ice-Breaking Games that encourage interaction among students like Human Bingo, Two Truths and a Lie, Catch or Clutch, Recall Rush, Drawing Relay, and Try Not to Laugh
  • Team-Building Challenges such as  the Tin Can Tower Defense, Helium Cane, I Command, You Move, Cup-flipping Tic-Tac-Toe, Lava Floor, and Bean Blitz, which not only promoted teamwork but also helped students develop essential collaboration skills
  • Click Click Scavenger Hunt, which is a photo scavenger hunt around the campus that encourages students to work together while discovering key locations and landmarks.

The event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony and the distribution of certificates to volunteers, celebrating the efforts of those who contributed to making Orientation Weekend a success.

Ayn Nur Adeena, Vice President of the Student Association and Event Lead of the Orientation Weekend event, expressed her delight with the outcome of the event, sharing, “The energy and enthusiasm of the new students are incredible, and it was heartening to see so many connections being made. Despite facing challenges, such as last-minute changes and the need for quick problem-solving, our team grew closer together. I hope that the participants gain a sense of community and confidence as they embark on this new chapter in their lives. Orientation Weekend was a memorable experience for all of us, and I am proud of what we achieved!”.

New students can also look forward to a myriad of exciting upcoming events by the Student Association, including club festivals, spirit weeks, cultural fests, NUMed Family Day, and many more. These promise to further enrich the student experience here.
