Once again, NUMed put a spin on World Anatomy Day, proudly hosting a public event at AEON Mall Bukit Indah on 26 October 2024. Organised by the Anatomy Working Group (AWG) in collaboration with the Asian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA), the event, which was manned by 19 student volunteers from our Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and BSc Biomedical Sciences programmes, aimed to heighten the public’s awareness and interest in human anatomy and health-related careers through a variety of interactive and educational activities.

Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Dr Vivian Verbo, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs; Ms Farhana, a representative from AEON Mall Bukit Indah; as well as our clinical, non-clinical, Biomedical Sciences, and Foundation lecturers, whose presence lent support to the initiative.

Over 500 members of the public thronged the event throughout the day, reflecting a strong community interest in anatomical knowledge. Meanwhile, the registration booth alone attracted nearly 200 visitors who redeemed anatomy merchandise.

The day featured a range of activities to cater to people from all walks of life. These included a Fun Anatomy Exhibition that allowed the public to explore the fascinating intricacies of the human anatomy via interactive displays led by our students and lecturers; anatomy competitions that saw our students showcasing their creativity and innovation, and included an anatomy body painting and catwalk; and anatomy-related quizzes, where visitors were able to test their knowledge and receive special anatomy souvenirs for their participation.

Besides that, there was a Cancer Awareness Booth, where visitors could learn vital information about skin, kidney, and breast cancer as well as make their own neuron charms, guided by our Foundation lecturers and students. NUMed’s marketing team was also on hand to provide information on its programmes to potential students and parents. Other highly anticipated events were a lucky draw, whereby both members of the public and the NUMed community stood a chance to win exciting prizes; and the anatomy cake-cutting, featuring a 3D heart cake baked by our very own anatomist, Dr Prakash.

The day culminated in a prize-giving ceremony, where Dr Verbo recognised the talented NUMed students who won the anatomy innovation and body painting and catwalk competitions. Winners received cash prizes, Legoland theme park tickets, hampers, trophies, and anatomy merchandise. Additionally, six lucky draw prizes, comprising electrical appliances, were also handed out to the winners.

Reflecting on the day, the Organising Chairperson, Nor Alia Mohamad shared, “Leading the World Anatomy Day celebration was an incredible experience. The success of this event was made possible through the great teamwork and dedication of each committee member, the unwavering support from our university, and the generosity of our sponsors,” before going on to express special gratitude to the university’s Provost and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Vishna Nadarajah; Chief Operating Officer, Ms Premila Nair; Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr Joanna Matthan; Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr Vivian Verbo; and AWG Lead, Dr Nurul Uyun Abdul Aziz for their tremendous support in making the event possible.
