UK NHS Career
I graduated with MB ChB BAO from Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. I undertook basic post-graduate training in Psychiatry leading to the MRCPsych qualification. I decided to specialise in the mental health of older people and completed Higher Specialist Training in Old Age Psychiatry where I obtained my Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Simultaneously, (in between work commitments and on-calls), I studied and obtained a Masters of Arts degree in Medical Ethics and Law from Keele University.
After obtaining my CCT, I worked as a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry in North Tyneside. I led my own Community Mental Health Team and was the Clinical Lead for the Memory Clinic. As a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, I was responsible for the delivery of outpatient and inpatient mental health services for my catchment area. This includes liaising with allied medical agencies and other medical specialties. As the Clinical Lead for the Memory Clinic, I made several improvements which led to the service being nationally accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. This is the first service in the Department of Old Age Psychiatry to achieve national accreditation.
I am recognised by the Royal College of Psychiatrist as a Basic Specialist Trainer. I was the College Tutor for the North Tyneside Psychiatric Training Scheme. I was the Clinical Examiner (CASC) for the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I had supervise many junior doctors in their post-graduate training.
At undergraduate level, I had taught and examine stage 3 and stage 5 Newcastle University medical students. I had also taught and examine medical students from other universities during my time as a Higher Specialist Trainee.
