I graduated with MBBS from the National University of Singapore in 1987. After completing housemanship in Singapore at KKH (O&G) & TTSH (General Surgery & Respiratory Medicine), I served my compulsory national service in the Singapore Armed Forces with stints in the Air Force and Woodbridge Hospital, then trained at the Officer Cadet School of Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute and was promoted to Captain, then worked at the Medical Classification Centre assisting in Psychiatric Assessment and Medical Boards. After a brief stint TTSH eye, I served in the ministry of home affairs at Queenstown Remand Prison and at the Sembawang Drug Rehabilitation Centre, then returned to the ministry of health at Woodbridge Hospital (now renamed the Institute of Mental Health). I joined the Hong Kong Psychiatric Training Scheme of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1992 and trained at the Prince of Wales Hospital affiliated with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a special interest in medical psychotherapy. I have been a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK) since 1995.
Since 1995, I served as Senior Medical Officer (Psychiatry) at the Yung Fung Shee Psychiatric Centre of the United Christian Hospital under the Kowloon East Cluster of the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong, with adjunct appointments as honorary clinical assistant professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at the University of Hong Kong, initially in general adult psychiatry with additional responsibilities in forensic reports, priority follow-up cases and learning disability.
I returned briefly to Singapore in 2000 to complete the higher psychiatric training requirements and was awarded a Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine Singapore in Psychiatry in 2001.
I spearheaded the consultation - liaison service at the Tseung Kwan O Hospital in 2000, and the Community Psychiatric Service in 2001. In 2003, I pioneered the Elderly Suicide Prevention Program (Kowloon East), and joined the Psychogeriatric Service, expanding the psychogeriatric outreach service to 43 aged homes and jointly ran a Memory Clinic with Geriatrics and allied health professionals. In 2007, I was awarded the Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists and in 2008, the Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.
I was a member of the Singapore Team to the Chess Olympiads in 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2002 and 2004. I was awarded the title of International Grandmaster by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in 2000. I am currently Vice-President of the Governing Board of the Singapore Chess Federation, and we successfully organized the Ding-Gukesh World Championship Match in 2024 in Singapore.
I previously served as treasurer then VP of the Psychotherapy Society of Hong Kong.
I also previously served on the executive board of the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, previously chairing the subcommittee overseeing 7 psychiatric rehabilitation Halfway Houses, and previously chairing the subcommittee overseeing 3 integrated community centres for mental wellness.
I hold a Master in Business Administration from Southeastern University (1997) and a Certificate in Chinese Medicine (HKU) in 2008. I retired from public service at the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong in 2020.
During the COVID lockdowns, I resumed work teaching Mental Health at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia since 2021, served as MOSLER year 4 Lead from 2021-2023 and Mental Health year 5 Lead from 2022-2024.
