Welcoming Events

A welcoming event is a planned occasion designed to greet and introduce new students — whether they’re local or international — to the NUMed community. The primary goal of such events is to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging and encourages interaction among attendees. These events typically include introductions, speeches by the NUMed board of directors, ice-breaking activities, and sometimes tours or presentations that provide insights about NUMed and its surroundings.

This annual event aims to introduce the incoming batch of Stage 1 students from the Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, and Foundation programmes to university life. It serves as a platform for freshmen to build relationships and network with new peers, as well as to familiarize themselves with their new environment.

Life in Johor Bahru

The City

About Iskandar Puteri

Iskandar Puteri is the largest urban integrated development in Southeast Asia, spanning 24,000 acres of signature catalytic developments aligned with sectors and industries outlined in the 10th Malaysia Plan. Formerly known as Nusajaya, it was launched in 2007 as one of five flagship zones of Iskandar Malaysia — the country’s leading emerging economic zone.

About Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru, the capital city of the state of Johor in Malaysia, is a vibrant metropolis rich in cultural diversity and modern conveniences. Located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and sharing borders with Singapore, it serves as a strategic hub for trade and tourism.

For more interesting places in Johor Bahru, you can view the Johor Travel Guide.

Climate

Malaysia has a tropical rainforest climate, also known as an equatorial climate, characterised by consistently high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The country experiences significant rainfall, especially during the monsoon seasons, which occur twice a year.

Between these monsoons are inter-monsoon periods, which may still experience rainfall but generally have more stable weather conditions. Average temperatures typically range between 22°C (72°F) and 32°C (90°F).

Languages

Malaysia is a multilingual country with a rich tapestry of languages reflecting its diverse population. The official language is Bahasa Malaysia (Malay), used in government, education, and daily communication. English is widely spoken and serves as a second language, particularly in business and higher education. Additionally, various ethnic communities speak their own languages, such as Mandarin and Tamil among Chinese and Indian Malaysians, respectively. Indigenous groups also have their own languages, contributing to the country's vibrant linguistic landscape. This diversity fosters a unique cultural blend, making Malaysia a fascinating example of linguistic coexistence.

Races and Religions

Johor reflects Malaysia's multicultural and multi-religious society, with various religious traditions coexisting and contributing to the state’s cultural landscape. The three main ethnic groups in Malaysia are Malays, Chinese, and Indians. While Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, people are free to practice other religions safely and peacefully throughout the Federation.
