Newcastle University student Nesta Baxter has scooped two medals at a top European tournament.
The tournament was in Zagreb, Croatia. Nesta won:
- the silver medal in the 65kg in Light Continuous category
- the bronze medal in the Point Fighting category
Her success placed Newcastle University 19th out of over 100 universities. Universities from 20 countries competed in the WAKO Kickboxing event of the tournament.
The second-year medical student said: “The competition was full of top class fighters from across Europe representing their universities. This was the first time that WAKO Kickboxing featured in the university games and lived up to all expectations.
“It was an exceptional week. I finished with a Silver and Bronze. These are two achievements I am very proud of to have won at such a high level of sport. A big thank you for all of the support from Newcastle University Sports Centre.”
Nesta is from Boston, Lincolnshire. She represented Great Britain over the four disciplines of WAKO Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Judo and Karate. She carried the Great Britain Flag at the Games.
A silver medal in the Light Continuous category
Nesta reached the final after beating World Class competitors, including the current 3rd World Ranked Fighter, in the semi-final. In the final, she came up against Andrea Busa of Hungary and lost by a slim margin.
A bronze medial in the Point Fighting category
Nesta won a Bronze medal after a strong win against a tough Irish fighter in the quarter finals. In the semi-finals, Nesta came up against the same fighter who she competed against in the Light Continuous finals. While Nesta gave everything, it was Busa who progressed to the finals and won the category.
Looking to the future
Nesta is competing for the WAKO Team GB Senior Team at the WAKO Kickboxing World Championships. These will be held in October in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Next year, Nesta hopes to represent Newcastle University again. She will compete at the EUSA European Sport Games 2020 and hopes to win the gold. These will be held in Belgrade, Serbia.
