8 July 2024

Great Britain have named a Newcastle University alumna in their 12-strong women’s sevens squad for this summer’s Paris Olympics Games.

Lauren Torley, who studied BSc Psychology and Nutrition at Newcastle University from 2019 to 2022, is representing Team GB this summer in their women’s rugby sevens squad.

Having originally honed her skills in touch rugby, Torley began contact rugby at Newcastle University before playing for Durham DMP Sharks and Harlequins FC as well as representative rugby for England.

Known for her versatility, Torley was also part of the gold medal-winning Team GB squad at the 2023 European Games.

Fraser Kennedy, Performance Sport Manager at Newcastle University, said:

“As well as developing new players into the game, we are very proud of the players who have pushed on into performance environments.

“Lauren’s selection for Team GB at the Paris Olympics Games is an incredible achievement and we wish her and the team all the best this summer.”

The women’s sevens event at the Olympics starts on 28 July.
