Teaching Rationale And Relationship

A fundamental understanding of the field of Critical Care is delivered to students predominately in the initial six week face-to-face study period through teaching sessions delivered by practicing experts. Students will be given the opportunity for formative practice.

Lecture sessions are used to establish a learning framework for the development of understanding, to explain complex concepts and to provide early insights into the relationships between theory and clinical practice.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The MCQ exam (single best answer style questions) will evaluate the student’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills in relation to critical care science. This assessment type will offer students the ability to apply the knowledge and experience they have obtained during the module and their hospital placements, to offer a comprehensive understanding of the module outcomes. This is particularly relevant as students will be based within various hospital departments during their work placements.

The student undertakes an oral presentation to demonstrate their attainment of the module knowledge outcomes, asssessing their ability to demonstrate this attainment clearly, concisely and with the use of correct terminology. The oral presentation offers opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge of critical care science in a format akin to a workplace teaching session. The material developed as part of this authentic assessment may be applicable in the real world as an element of the student’s workbased portfolio.
