Aims

To extend and nuance the range of skills and subject matter of students writing poetry and to encourage formal and thematic experimentation, while allowing students the framework in which to reflect critically and creatively on their own and other people’s writing.

Outline Of Syllabus

Over the course of taught sessions and scheduled individual tutorials, students will look at a range of poetry and poetic devices in order to develop their understanding of the tools and resources available to them as writers. Students will explore potential poetic sources and resources, experiment with a variety of dictions and registers, and have the chance to move towards developing their work in response to seminars, tutorials, and independent study and practice.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Through close reading, discussion, writing exercises, and feedback received in seminars and tutorials, students will apply their knowledge of a range of poetic forms, techniques and thematic concerns to their own writing practice. They will incorporate the skills of revision, self-evaluation, and selection into the preparation of their final portfolio.
