Meet Varsha

Data Science and AI MSc

Hi, I’m Varsha. I came to Newcastle from India as I was drawn to the vibrant international community and focus on practical, hands-on learning. It’s the perfect environment to boost my skills and broaden my global perspective.

The main reason I chose not to study in my home country is my desire for international exposure. When looking at universities, I was particularly impressed by the groundbreaking research conducted at Newcastle University, which aligns with my academic and professional aspirations.

Newcastle's excellent connectivity, including its metro, bus network, and proximity to an airport, ensures convenient travel within the city and beyond. These factors, combined with the University's outstanding academic reputation, made it the perfect choice for my postgraduate studies.

A second home

What surprised me about Newcastle is how peaceful the city is, with a calm and relaxed atmosphere. At the same time, the passion for football here is incredible, with dedicated fans creating an exciting energy. It's inspiring to see how everyone embraces life and enjoys it, which motivates me to do the same

Newcastle truly feels like a second home, with its accessibility, vibrant student life and the amazing friends I’ve made along the way.

One of the highlights for me was celebrating Diwali here. It was an exciting and meaningful experience and being part of it allowed me to connect with others and share this important cultural celebration.

Support at a stressful time

After arriving in the UK, I faced a challenging situation when my father fell ill and had to be hospitalised, creating a need for me to fly back to India. However, I had assignments that needed to be submitted.

I reached out to Student Wellbeing, and their guidance provided me with the clarity and support I needed. Mental health is crucial while studying, and the University's team has been incredibly supportive in helping me navigate through difficult times.

Completing an internship

Studying abroad is allowing me to gain a broader perspective, foster global connections, and access advanced academic resources unavailable in my home country.

I am currently doing an internship as a machine learning intern with Train Air Ltd. I secured this opportunity through the NCL Internship Scheme.

What stands out about my course is that it doesn't include written exams, which allows for a more practical and engaging approach to learning. The availability of term-time internship opportunities also provides valuable practical experience.

My future career aspirations

In the future, I see myself working as a machine learning engineer or data scientist, specialising in AI applications within industries such as healthcare or automotive. I aim to leverage my skills to tackle real-world problems, contribute to innovative projects and drive advancements in data science.

The University’s support services, such as career advice, internships, and networking opportunities, have further clarified my career path. Additionally, the exposure to cutting-edge research and real-world applications of AI has inspired me to pursue research in the field.
