Meet Chinomso

International Development and Education with Cross-cultural Communication MA

Hi, I’m Chinomso. I moved from Nigeria to the UK for my postgraduate studies. I picked Newcastle University because of the course, which combined the areas I'm passionate about: humanitarian services, education and communication.

Nigeria has a robust education system, but I wasn’t able to find a course which covered my particular interests close to home. From my own research, I discovered the UK had a great reputation for academic excellence.

I was privileged to be awarded the Vice Chancellor Excellence Scholarship. This scholarship has given me the chance to achieve a world-class education studying one of the top 50 Development Studies courses in the world.

Access to a wealth of academic resources, a diverse community and enriching school programmes has all been possible because of the funding I received.

Hands-on learning and experience

Before arriving in the UK, I had read about Newcastle and prepared for the experience in my mind. However, I was surprised by the warmth of the people. Everyone I've come across so far has been nice and respectful.

What really stands out about my course is the placement module which allows you to get hands-on experience in the UK or abroad.

As for the university, I love that teaching is student-centred which gives you the chance to think critically and develop relevant skills. Technology is also integrated into learning

Student life and support

Outside of my course, I’ve used the Careers Service to position myself effectively for employment. The Student Financial Support team have also helped me manage my budget.

There are so many activities organised by the Student’s Union. I'm part of the Global Development Society, which is a society that aims to discuss global issues and contribute to ongoing actions regarding SDG goals.

Preparing to take the lead

I'm studying challenges in education in developing countries, alongside the SDG expectations. This is giving me the relevant knowledge, skills, experience and network to work in my intended career positions.

If you're passionate about saving the world through education, Newcastle has the right course for you.

After I graduate, I intend to leverage my experience to work in roles leading organisations to improve educational policies and their application. In the future, I see myself in advanced leadership positions reforming education across Africa and beyond.
