Meet Christine

International Multimedia Journalism MA

Hi, I’m Christine, I’m from Germany. I chose Newcastle as I had previously done an Erasmus Exchange in Durham, so I knew I would like it here. I was also eager to explore North East England due to its proximity to Scotland, a country I have always been interested in.

Due to my previous studies in Media Studies and English, I wanted to combine the two and study Journalism. I’m hoping this degree will open doors to more global opportunities while improving my language skills. When deciding where to study, I couldn’t find any degrees in Germany that would do this for me.

The application was easily accessible, as the website guided me through every single step. I enjoyed writing my motivational letter because I really wanted to be part of this course. I was surprised to hear back so early (almost a year before my course started).

To help fund my studies, I received the scholarship for EU master's students and the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence EU scholarship.

A thought-provoking course

The curriculum looked very appealing to me compared to other universities in the country. It combines the right amount of theory with developing my practical skills. Newcastle University has great extracurricular opportunities and modern facilities too.

I enjoy the lively discussions we have in class when everyone presents their own studies. It may sound cheesy, but it almost feels like I have found a little family with my peers here already.

I’d describe my course as engaging, compelling and thought-provoking. The lectures and seminars make me think more critically and creatively. At the same time, they give me enough freedom to do my own research.

Opportunities to build my portfolio

The theories and laws in journalism that I have learnt so far have helped me greatly with my practical work. We are constantly urged to maintain a critical approach and think outside the box. I also really like that we talk about examples from different countries, making us look beyond borders.

Moreover, there are many opportunities for us to build our personal portfolios. I’ve had the opportunity to write for The Courier. I go to concerts and write reviews on them – I had no idea I could do that before I came here! The Student Media Afternoon is one of my highlights every week. This is where I get to pick up a new article so I can do my research and write about different things I am interested in.

The kindness of the Geordies

Everyone I have encountered here so far has been nothing but kind and helpful. It’s my favourite thing about studying here. Also, the campus is just a great place to be – the buildings and facilities are an ideal environment to motivate me every day.

I’ve been so surprised by the kindness of the Geordies! I knew from my time in Durham that people here are special and some of the friendliest I have met, but my time here has reinforced that thinking.

I am also surprised about the many opportunities outside of university, whether that is extracurricular, or the cultural institutions of the city.

On campus, there are so many ways to fill your spare time. I am part of the University choir, go to yoga classes and occasionally go hiking with the Fellwalkers Society. And of course I write for the newspaper! Taking part in these societies helps me de-stress and spend time with people with the same interests.

I have found a great friendship group through my course, with people from here and many internationals. Recently, we all came together to celebrate 'Friendsgiving' since one of my friends is from the US, and everyone contributed to a fantastic feast.

Supportive environment

Newcastle University almost seems like a hidden gem. I haven’t needed to use any of the support services here yet. However, I'm sure I will someday and based on my encounters so far, I’m confident that they will help me in every way they can.

Looking to the future

I am hoping to work either in foreign reporting or the communications sector of an NGO. My course is helping me develop my multimedia journalistic skills while giving me the tools to do my own research and approach subjects that I am interested in an ethical way.
