Aims

To enhance the abilities of the student to apply material from formal lecture courses to the design or operation of a real engineering device or system.

Outline Of Syllabus

A design study, associated with a chosen lecture course, involving the attainment of a device or system specification. Design options must be carefully weighted and the reasons for choosing particular options presented in a final written report. An academic staff supervisor is available for consultation.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module requires the student to address a problem which enhances their theoretical understanding of a given module by undertaking a piece of work in which he/she is wholly responsible but with the support of an academic supervisor.

Alternatives will be offered to students unable to be present-in-person due to the prevailing C-19 circumstances.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

From the first report, the ability of the student will be assessed regarding:
1. Subject-specific skills - overall design and understanding of the problem.
2. Core skills - how the problem was solved, use of initiative. Computer literacy - use of CAD tools; numeracy skills; report writing.
3. Cognitive skills - analysis of interim results, limitations to the solution provided, current progress against milestones, etc.

From the final report, the ability of the student will be assessed regarding:
