Aims

To provide students with an advanced understanding of modern controller design. To enhance student’s appreciation of practical issues and problems associated with the design of real-life control systems and appropriate techniques for improving controller performance. To provide insight into current trends in the field.

Outline Of Syllabus

Ordinary Differential Equations
• First, second and nth order systems
• Systems of first order differential equations

State Space Analysis
• Solution of a state space model
• State space transformations
• Controllability/Observability
• State feedback and LQR control

Nonlinear Dynamics
• Properties of nonlinear systems
• Linearisation
• Stability

Robust/Sliding mode control
• Ideal systems
• Nonsmooth control law
• Uncertainty
• Finite Convergence

Adaptive control
• Basic concepts of adaptive control
• Model Reference Adaptive Control

Further advanced material drawn from:

• Stochastic estimation (Kalman Filters),

• Further adaptive/self tuning techniques
• Optimum control
• Model Predictive control

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This is a combination of normal lectures and computer practical sessions using CAD packages like Matlab/Simulink. Through this combination and the constant interaction with the facilitator the students will be able to better understand and apply the concepts of modern advanced control systems techniques.
