Aims
The aim of this module is to provide students with principles of how exercise can be used as a preventative and therapeutic method in health and disease. Particular attention will be paid to the physiological underpinning of why exercise yields multiple health benefits in conditions that are major societal issues, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and healthy ageing.
Outline Of Syllabus
The syllabus will cover the following topics:
• Overview of exercise: modality, intensity
• Acute and chronic exercise adaptations
• Metabolism in healthy and diseased states
• Exercise and insulin sensitivity
• Skeletal muscle mass and ageing
• Obesity and liver disease
• Exercise and Type 2 diabetes
• Cardiovascular health
• Disease prevention, treatment and survival
• Exercise and non-communicable disease
• Ethical issues in exercise research

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures provide the platform for providing key knowledge and concepts for students to extend in private study. Research Seminar workshops will expand on the material presented in lectures and also provide students with the opportunity to practice and reflect on, individually and in the seminar groups, their critical and analytical skills. The first session of the course (Introductory Workshop) will include information on the in course assessments.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The scientific critique assesses each student’s ability to summarise literature and to scrutinise scientific rationale, methods and data reporting.
The infographic and layman report is designed to test the student’s ability to understand and distil important knowledge to a lay audience. The assessment also allows students to implement IT skills.
