Aims
To provide a general introduction to the practical and professional dimensions of the basic work of the Planning and Development Surveyor by introducing: (i) the principles and limitations of measuring landed property; and (ii) the principles of mapping and geographic information science (GIS) with emphasis on the accuracy, scale, currency, and fitness for purpose of hardcopy and/or digital maps, drawings, and plans. It provides a forum for contextualising knowledge of regulation and practice in planning gained from other modules within a context of working within or alongside the planning and development surveying profession.
The skills and knowledge areas will be conveyed in the context of reflexive professional practice through lecture/workshop sessions introducing techniques of measurement and mapping and GIS, case study examples, and hands-on practical exercises.

Introduction to the principles of measurement and its and limitations, and mapping and GIS in theory and practice. Lectures/practical sessions on measurement, and how mapping works and its fitness for purpose

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The teaching methods are based around a series of learning outcomes that require students to learn and understand technical and professional principles and then be able to contextualise these in relation to their practice. The lecture sessions introduce key principles whilst the practical sessions apply the principles.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The assessments are appropriate. The essay tests the students’ theoretical principles comprehension whilst the report offers the students the opportunity to practise the theoretical principles learned. They also test the students’ ability to conduct a piece of independent research.
