Aims

To develop an understanding of the complexity of Green Infrastructure (GI) and how as urban designers we can create strategies and interventions that at one and same time address human well-being and biodiversity enhancement.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module explores the complexities of creating Green Infrastructure (GI) strategies and interventions to great environments for human well-being and biodiversity enhancement. It challenges students to think out of the box in relation to that provision at from the macro to micro levels. Moreover, to think more holistically about the concepts of place, and connectivity in holistic ways. The syllabus will cover:
•       The dimensions and complexities of GI
•       Frameworks for understanding and analysing GI
•       The impact of GI for human well-being
•       Principles of biodiversity enhancement, rewilding and nature based solutions
•       GI strategies
•       How to intervene as micro scale for human well-being and biodiversity enhancement

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This is a studio module so most teaching involves design tutoring and individual study. There are lectures at the beginning of the project introducing key themes to the students which they will then be able to use independent study and literature provided to deepen their understanding off.

Tutorials will advance the analysis work of groups weeks 1 and 2 and individual projects weeks 3 to 11.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

This is a design project and is assessed by design review.

Individual Project - summative assessment (90%)
The individual project is designed to showcase the knowledge and skills developed during the project. The assessment criteria are based on the learning outcomes and assessment criteria outlined in the project brief. The student will be expected to demonstrate their conceptual thinking (ARB GC2), overall strategy (ARB GC4, GC7) and detailed interventions (ARB GC5; GES), through sketches, plans, cross-sections, renders and other graphics (as necessary) to a scale agreed by the design tutor.

Reflective Log - summative assessment (10%)
The reflective log is an individual piece of work which reflects on the knowledge and skills developed during the project (ARB GC2). Through plans, diagrammatic representation and sketches the student should focus on the achievement and limitations of their engagement with the project; how the project relates to their overall learning on their degree; and the contribution of the project to their portfolio. The reflective log should be presented as an adjunct to the portfolio itself – maximum 3 x A4 sheets.
