Aims
To provide knowledge and understanding of the need for sustainability to be a key consideration in engineering practice. To underline the requirements for consideration to environmental, social and economic factors when making business decisions. (M7)
To explain the need for Sustainable Development, the role of Chemical Engineering in society and understand the requirement for its activities to be conducted in a sustainable way. To show the need for Environmental, Social, Economic, Equality and Diversity considerations in the management of planning and operation of new projects and review methods to assess this. (M6,M11,M16-M18).
Outline Of Syllabus
Drivers for sustainable development, Sustainable Development Goals. Government strategies, Economic Instruments, Sustainability Principles and Policies; Stakeholder analysis, Sustainability Reporting, CSR, ESG Risk and Communication, Media/community relations. Methods of Assessment of the Sustainability of projects such as SusOp.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
At Masters level the focus is on guided independent study and group supported learning. Online guided learning material is delivered to students via Canvas. The lectures will provide students with the opportunity to discuss concepts with lecturers and their peers to consolidate their understanding.
Key knowledge is developed and consolidated by the formative group work which allows the students to evaluate and understand the limitations and applications of SD techniques to assess projects in real life

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The formative work facilitates the development of group work skills whilst allowing the students to critically assess the role of engineering in society and present those findings. The coursework assignment tests the students' critical thinking, ability to peer review, team working skills, written communication, numeracy, research and subject-specific skills.
