Aims

This module aims to integrate areas of aetiology and pathophysiology of diseases and conditions with their clinical, pharmacological and evidence-based dietetic treatments. Students will also consider the application of behaviour change techniques when formulating dietetic treatment plans.

Outline Of Syllabus

Aetiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and clinical and dietary treatments of selected genetic, mental health and physical health diseases and conditions (including, but not limited to, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, neurological, endocrine and immune), cancer, and critical care.
Clinical pharmacology, drug-nutrient interactions, legal aspects of medicine management.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures and web based materials, supported by tutorials, group discussions, seminars, and workshops.

Directed research and reading will prepare students for understanding theoretical material delivered in greater detail during lectures and small group teaching. Workshops will utilise a case-based learning approach to apply theoretical material .

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The Digital exam will utilise essays to test students’ knowledge of the aetiology and pathophysiology of conditions, clinical tests and investigations, and medicals, surgical and pharmacological treatments.

Case studies will be used in the PC exam to assess clinical reasoning and care planning for dietetic interventions. Workshops throughout the module will provide opportunity for formative feedback as well as the revision tutorials.



MDiet candidates must obtain an overall mark of 40 or above to pass the module, however, if the module has more than one assessment students must also achieve a mark of at least 35 in each component of the assessment to pass the module.
