Aims

1. To enable the student to identify and to research individual subject matter and content, and to find appropriate formal and technical means for its development.
2. To prepare the student for the sustained practices, media/studio specialisms and increased level of independence of Stage 3.
3. To further develop the student's ability to critically assess studio work and to begin to place it into context.
4. To extend the student's knowledge of a range of approaches to Fine Art practice.
5. To increase the student's awareness of professional practice.

The Fine Art practice-based module follows FIN2013 and is designed to consolidate and further develop a self-directed, informed and well-supported creative practice.

Students determine the main focus of the practice-based activity within the broad range of Fine Art practice (painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital and time-based media). In addition to their principal area/areas of creative practice students will select a Life Work Art (LWA) strand designed to introduce the context in which professional artists work. For the LWA strand students carry out an individual or group project that takes place beyond the University, such as a placement with a gallery, artist or visual arts organisation, or a public art project or exhibition. These may take place in virtual or online formats dependent on Covid-19 restrictions.

Tutorials, crits, peer review, optional workshops, gallery visits and the Visiting Speaker's programme continue to support the student in further exploring the formal, technical and conceptual aspects of an increasingly self-initiated and self-directed practice. As such it is designed to provide a foundation for Stage 3 by enabling the student to both define a personal direction in their practice, and to begin to locate it within a contemporary fine art context.

Scheduled leaching and learning activities will be conducted present in person in the Fine Art studios and workshops (or synchronous online if necessary).

Outline Of Syllabus

Students attend a schedule of practice-based tutorials, group crits and peer review.
Students participate in a Life Work Art strand.
Students attend weekly lectures in the Visiting Speakers Programme.
Students can further support their practice-based learning through optional workshops.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures through the visiting speaker programme provide an introduction to the contemporary art context, professional practice and present a range of practical, conceptual and theoretical approaches to Fine Art practice. Life Work Art strands provide an introduction to the context in which professional artists work. Tutorials and group crits allow students to discuss their work with a tutor and/or peers and to critically reflect on their work and progress. Tutorials also provide feedback from tutors and peers.

Tutorials are a principal method of teaching allowing students to discuss their work in depth, and to receive regular feedback on all aspects of their practice assisting progress towards all key learning outcomes. Peer group 'crits' help students to present their work and to critically reflect on their work and that of others. Peer review sessions allow students to familiarise themselves with assessment criteria and to further develop critical reflection.

Guided independent learning in the form of the research and development of a body of creative work assists students to establish increasingly independent practices with sound working methods appropriate to their interests and chosen media. Elective workshops and forums assist the exploration of technical processes and materials and develop students understanding of the implications and possibilities of chosen media. Maintenance of a Digital Notebook/portfolio assists the development of sound research methods, the capacity to plan and make decisions as well as aiding preparation for and reflection on tutorials.

Life Work Art workshops facilitate the acquisition of knowledge of professional opportunities and contexts, and develop subject-specific professional skills.


Nb. Scheduled teaching and learning activities will typically be conducted present in person in the Fine Art studios and workshops. Teaching methods may be liable to adjustment in response to changes to Government and University Covid-19 advice and restrictions. PiP teaching would be substituted by equivalent synchronous and asynchronous online delivery. Where scheduled teaching and learning activities are delivered via non-synchronous online sessions they will be followed by a synchronous on-line drop-in Q&A session.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The presentation of a body of art work, a reflective Life Work Art strand report and other related contextual, research and reflective material such as studio notebook, sketchbooks and documentation enables assessment of the full range of a student’s engagement with the module in relation to: research and developmental methods; technical processes and materials; identification of subject matter; formal and conceptual considerations; contextual understanding; independent planning, management and direction of their practice; critical self-reflection and awareness of professional practice. It will show the basis and development of a viable, effective and exploratory creative practice and its capacity to enable the development of a body of artwork.

Summative assessment in the semester 2 exam period can be assessed by presentation of physical artworks and supporting material or by online portfolio only if required due to Covid-19-related restrictions.
