Staff Profile
Dr Abisola Balogun
Research Associate
Background
My educational background is in health promotion and disease prevention. I am experienced in conducting high quality applied health research using a range of qualitative research methods. My PhD in Public Health, which I obtained from the University of Sheffield, employed qualitative research methods to explore the lived experiences of HIV positive men who have sex with men (MSM) living in Nigeria particularly in relation to how they navigate and negotiate access into the healthcare system in Nigeria. Since concluding my PhD in 2017, I have continued to build a research portfolio in applied health research with marginalised, vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations using qualitative research methods.
In previous roles, I have worked on a range of NIHR-funded applied health research projects including projects exploring experiences of memory and forensics in a medium secure unit, experiences of self-management of long-term physical health condition in people with severe mental illness, enablers and barriers to clinical academics, and General Dental Council Fitness to Practice experiences of dentists

I currently work as a Research Associate within the Population Health Sciences Institute at Newcastle University. In my current role I lead on the WELLBEING Study, which is a programme of work in partnership with children and young people, parents/caregivers and practitioners who support them from social care and mental health care, that aims to co-produce an intervention to prevent mental health problems developing in children in contact with social care. The project involves qualitative data collection (focus groups and interviews), systematic reviewing and co-production.
