Find out about our fellowship opportunities for outstanding post-doctoral scientists.
We want to attract future research leaders from around the world and support them to develop successful academic careers at Newcastle University. Our Faculty offers two main research fellowship schemes for outstanding post-doctoral scientists:
- Faculty Fellowships for early career scientists
- Newcastle University Research Fellowships for early to mid-career scientists
The University also offers Newcastle University Academic Track Fellowships.
Faculty Fellowships
Flexible awards for early stages post-doctoral researchers who plan to apply for externally funded fellowships.
A Faculty Fellowship is for early career scientists to develop an original research idea and secure external fellowship funding. The Fellowship provides two years funding, with the possibility of an extension to three years based on performance.
Eligibility
- PhD in the subject area in the last five years
- strong publication record
- eligible for externally funded fellowship awards
How to apply
When applying you'll need to attach the following via the electronic vacancy system:
- your CV with publications
- a covering letter with confirmation of which fellowship level you are applying for
Outline of your plan to win an external Fellowship
You should include an outline of your plan to win an external fellowship (or equivalent), including the topic, a brief project plan for developing your proposal (including acquisition of pilot data and internal peer review of your proposal), with indicative costings, and an explanation of how your area of work will fit with the research of the host institute you wish to join. This should be three pages maximum. This should cover an initial fellowship period of two years.

You should include details of the intended external fellowship schemes you will be applying for, with timescales and confirmation of eligibility.
Information for internal Newcastle University applicants
Internal Newcastle University applicants should provide detail on how you have already acquired, or plan to develop, direct knowledge or experience of a research group in another institution prior to submitting your external fellowship application.
During the Fellowship I have had excellent support, including funding, training and mentorship.
Newcastle University Research Fellowships
Develop your independent research career at Newcastle University
A Newcastle University Research Fellowship is for early to mid-career research scientists. A Research Fellowship provides up to five years funding to develop your independent research activities.
You will have access to our excellent scientific facilities and will be provided with your own laboratory space. Regular constructive review and mentoring by senior academics will help you realise your potential and support your transition to an independent research leader.
Eligibility
- PhD in the subject area
- outstanding publication record
- relevant active post-doctoral experience
- eligible for external funding
Support available
The fellow will be provided with mentorship and development support and resourced to establish their own independent research team, including a competitive start up package (comprising consumables and PhD studentship funding). If successful in sustaining and growing an internationally competitive group, fellows can expect to be offered an open ended Faculty appointment at the end of the fellowship term.
