I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS foundation trust with a particular interest in young adult hip pathology. I am also an Honorary Consultant at Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust.
I have completed my training in the North East and have done fellowships in joint preservation surgery in Cambridge, London and Switzerland. My area of expertise is the treatment of disorders of the young adult hip, and I have established a tertiary referral practice catering to this group of patients with referrals from all over the country. In my routine practice, I perform hip preserving surgeries like hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement, sports injuries of the hip and periacetabular osteotomy for hip dysplasia using a minimally invasive approach. I do the highest volume of hip preservation surgery (150-200) in the North East of England.
I was awarded the prestigious ABC (America-Britain-Canada) fellowship in 2016 by the British Orthopaedic Association, which involved visits to various high-profile centres in USA and Canada to learn about new systems and techniques.
I am very active in research and have completed a PhD in the role of hip arthroscopy in improving quality of life. I supervise research fellows and have enabled them to complete various degrees and projects. I am in the British Orthopaedic Association Education and Careers Committee as the National lead of the UK and Ireland orthopaedic in-training examination, an annual assessment of orthopaedic surgeons in training. I regularly teach in national and international hip preservation courses and mentor consultants to establish similar services in their own trust. I am also an examiner for FRCS T&O.
Additionally, I am Deputy Editor of the Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery (Oxford University Press), an Editorial board member of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Associate Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedics (Elsevier), the Chair of the UK Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR) and the Chair of the Research Grants Committee of SICOT.
My research interests are -
- Femoroacetabular impingement and Hip dysplasia - Principal Investigator in Northumbria for FASHiON trial which compares hip arthroscopy and non-operative treatment for FAI; Chief Investigator for HiPPO trial looking at the role of PRP for GTPS
- Outcomes after hip preservation surgery - periacetabular osteotomy and hip arthroscopy
- Machine learning (AI) in predicting outcomes after surgery
- Use of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Orthopaedic Surgery
- Improving outcome after hip and knee replacement - the role of Anaemia screening and MSSA decolonisation
- Enhanced recovery in hip and knee replacement
Local and Regional roles
- Orthopaedic registrar and foundation doctor training in Northumbria
- Orthopaedic training programme teaching in the North East
