I studied Biochemistry/Microbiology at the University of Leeds and was awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Pharmacy) from University of Nottingham on an MRC Studentship.
My first academic post was a Post Doctoral Research Associate in the German Cancer Research Centre, Heidelberg. I returned to the UK to a Research Associate role in the department of Haematology in Newcastle University and have
remained in the North East ever since. My early career included roles as a Grade B Clinical Scientist in Haematology and a Lecturer in Marrow Transplant Biology, specialising in the pathogenesis of Graft versus Host Disease.
I went on to become a Senior Lecturer whilst Head of the Tyneside Leukaemia Research Laboratories and became Health Professions Council registered as a Clinical Scientist. For several years I continued my research activity on
transplantation and graft versus host disease which culminated in a Professorship in 2002. During this time I developed Skimune® Technology, which has been used as a predictive assay for GvHD in Newcastle as part of a clinical protocol for
treatment of haematological disorders. I founded my spin-out Company Alcyomics Ltd in 2007, where I developed Skimune to test drugs for allo-immune responses (i.e. transplant rejection) but also for predicting contact sensitivity and allergic
reactions with development of novel IP.
I am also Director of Newcastle Cellular Therapies Facility. In partnership between Newcastle University and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, this is one of the largest facilities in Europe, designed specifically for the production of cellular therapies such as Autologous tolerogenic dendritic cells for rheumatoid arthritis and Limbal stem cells for limbal stem cell deficiency.
